Making Layers Visible and Inspectable

Visible layers are rendered on the map when the map scale is within a layer's visibility cutoff. When the map scale is outside of the range of a layer's visibility cutoff, the name of that layer that appears in the Layer Legend is colored gray and italicized.

While visibility specifies whether the spatial objects on a map layer appear on the map, inspectability specifies whether the relational data associated with those spatial objects can be accessed.

Click the check box () to the left of a layer or layer group to make that layer or all layers within a group visible on the map. Click the inspectability button () to the right of a layer or layer group to make that layer or all layers within a group inspectable.

A check box filled with a square () at the layer group level indicates that some of the layers within that group are not enabled for visibility.

Just because a layer is selected , it doesn't mean that layer is automatically visible on the map. The map must also be zoomed within the visible scale range defined for a layer in the Layer Properties pane. Change the visible scale range to change the map scale at which a layer is visible.

Items also won't be visible on the map unless a symbol, pattern, or fill is defined for those items.

To specify whether a layer is visible on the map

Layers preceded by in the Map Legend are licensed to your organization; however, all of the licensed seats associated with this layer are currently being used. To see who is occupying each seat, see Related Topics below.

To specify whether a layer is inspectable

A layer can be inspected even if it's not currently visible on the map, which can be either because the map scale is too large, or the visibility check box in the Layer Legend pane is cleared.
