Viewing LAS File Contents

After you open an LAS file using LAS tools, view the contents of LAS files using the various tabs in LAS tools. With the exception of the Visual Log tab, most functionality appears in the left toolbar and the tabs to the right are used mostly for display. However, you can often type directly in a given tab.

Following provides a summary of the contents of each tab:

Version Displays version and wrap mode information about the LAS file. LAS tools supports both LAS versions 1.2 and 2.0 and can convert version 1.2 LAS files to version 2.0.
Well Displays well identification information from the LAS file. This information includes the start and stop depths, step information, the null value used in the file, the field name, logging dates, the UWI and more.
Curves Displays curve information from the LAS file. This information includes mnemonics, units, API codes, and more.
Parameters Displays various information that relates to the well from the optional section in the LAS file. This information may include bit size, fluid density, mud characteristics, kelly bushing elevation, and more.
Tops
(ver 2.0 LAS files)
Displays formation tops information from this non-standard, but widely used section. This information includes the name and depth of formation tops.
Other Displays various information from the optional section of the LAS file. This information may include comments.
Data Displays the actual log readings for each curve defined in the Curves tab above.
Visual Well Displays curve coverage. The left side of the graph indicates the depth interval of the log data. Formation tops, when available, are displayed at the appropriate depths across the graph. The vertical bars represent the interval coverage for each curve. If a specific curve does not contain data coverage (i.e. contains null values) over any portion of the displayed depth interval, that portion of the vertical bar is blank.
Visual Log Displays graphical log curves in a format similar to a hardcopy log. Formation tops, when available, are displayed at the appropriate depths across the tracks.
Statistics Displays summary information about the curves including curve name, units, and start and stop depth.

Information is read directly from the LAS file, so if LAS tools fails to display certain information, that information is likely absent in the original LAS file.

Only text colored black can be changed, red text can't be changed. If you notice an error in text that's colored red, either correct the LAS file using a third-party ASCII text editor or contact Customer Care. LAS tools changes values that pertain to the file content or format automatically when you change the LAS version, or the start, stop, or step information.
