Test Types

A well test is the measurement of a well’s response to a known and controlled change. Traditionally, rate is controlled and the pressure response is measured, but there are alternative ways to test wells. The most appropriate test depends on when the test is conducted, well location, well and formation type, the cost of the test, and value of the information to be obtained from the test. Each type of well test has its own set of equations and plots to facilitate analyzing the measured data.

Test types include the following:

Drawdown / Buildup

Injection / Falloff
Minifrac
PITA and Closed Chamber Tests
