Terminology

 Term Definition

Absolute pressure (kPaa) A pressure reading measured from 0. i.e., atmospheric pressure will be approx. 101.15 kPa (14.7 psi)

AOF Absolute Open Flow - What the well would flow under ideal conditions.

bbl/d Barrels per day = 0.159 m3/d

Damage A restriction to flow within the formation, an implied artificial reduction in permeability.

Darcy The unit of permeability . Defined as that permeability that will allow a fluid with a viscosity of 1 cp. (water) to flow at a rate of 1 (cm3/cm2)/sec under a pressure differential of 1 atmosphere / cm. Named after H. Darcy a French ground water geologist circa 1856.

DC/DP Drill Collar/Drill Pipe

Gauge pressure (kPag) A pressure reading corrected to zero from absolute (i.e., kPaa - 101.15)

GTS Gas To Surface

H2S Hydrogen Sulfide gas -- (smells like rotten eggs, very deadly, very corrosive)

Horner Plot A graph used to extrapolate the shut-in data to infinite time. Used to calculate the initial reservoir pressure. Named after its inventor D.R.Horner.

Hydrostatic The weight, measured in term of pressure, of a column of fluid.

ID/OD Inside Diameter/Outside Diameter

kPa Kilo Pascal - The SI (Canadian) unit for pressure = 1000 Pascals = 0.145 psi

md millidarcy - 1/1000 of a Darcy

misrun A test that was not successful in evaluating the zone of interest.

OCM Oil cut mud (mud containing some oil)

Pa Pascal -- the SI measure of pressure, 1 pascal is the pressure produced by a force of 1 Newton uniformly distributed over 1 square meter, (1 Newton per m2 )

Permeability A measure of the ability of a porous material to allow fluid to flow.

psi pounds (force) per square inch -- the Imperial measure of pressure = 6.895 kPa

Skin factor A measure of the pressure drop between the formation and the wellbore, used to imply damage, or a restriction to flow induced by drilling.

TSTM Too Small To Measure - used to indicate very small gas rate.
